A 31-year-old man has been charged after allegedly reversing into a police cruiser while attempting to flee arrest in Waterloo, according to regional police.

Officers were called to a parking lot near Ottawa Street North and Weber Street East around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, where they found the man slumped over in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle containing open alcohol.

When officers approached, the man reportedly tried to escape, hitting a police vehicle and driving over a curb before being taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

He now faces several charges, including impaired and dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest. Additional offences were also laid under the Highway Traffic Act and Liquor Licence and Control Act. The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
