A 24-year-old man has been taken into custody after allegedly fleeing a police checkpoint in a stolen vehicle and injuring an officer.
The incident occurred just before midnight on March 21 at the northbound Highway 427 on-ramp from The Queensway, where officers were conducting a RIDE program. Police were alerted by an automatic licence plate reader that a vehicle at the scene might be stolen, prompting officers to initiate a stop.
While officers were speaking with the driver outside the vehicle, a passenger reportedly moved into the driver’s seat, drove off, and attempted to escape. During the getaway, the vehicle struck another car, an empty police cruiser, and several officers, leaving one officer with minor injuries that required hospital treatment.
Authorities later tracked down the suspect in Toronto with assistance from multiple police units and arrested him on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Khaleil McDonald, who has no fixed address, now faces 12 charges, including assault related to resisting arrest, and remains in custody after a bail hearing.
