Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a series of early morning incidents in the town of Cardinal that unfolded in quick succession on Tuesday.
The situation began around 4 a.m. with a house fire on Adelaide Street in the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Shortly afterward, a second fire broke out at a nearby fire station.
During the response, a male driver attempted to flee the scene of the fire station and crashed into another vehicle, causing minor injuries. He was taken into custody by police.
The township later confirmed that the fire at the station was relatively small but involved the theft of a township vehicle, which has since been recovered.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to piece together the events. Cardinal is located along the St. Lawrence River, east of Brockville and south of Ottawa.
Update – On Wednesday Oct 15, police announced the arrest of a 40-year-old man from Cardinal in connection with a vehicle collision, a stolen vehicle, and a fire at a fire station. He faces multiple charges, including assault, arson, and theft. However, he has not been charged in relation to the house fire on Adelaide Street.
