A deadly house fire in Wasaga Beach is under investigation after a man’s body was discovered inside the home.

Emergency crews responded to a fire on River Road East just before 3:30 a.m. Tuesday following reports of someone possibly trapped inside. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the house. An aggressive attempt to control the fire was made but had to be scaled back due to a collapsing roof.

After the blaze was brought under control, crews located a deceased man in a bedroom during a secondary search.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause. Preliminary findings suggest the smoke alarms did not activate.

No firefighters were injured. Damage is estimated at $600,000, and the identity of the victim has not yet been released.
