A 70-year-old man was taken to hospital as a precaution after his vehicle crashed into a business on Riverside Drive in Ottawa on Friday afternoon.
Paramedics were called to the 2000 block of Riverside Drive around 4 p.m. following reports of a car striking a building. Crews found the vehicle had broken through an exterior wall and window area of the bank. Firefighters secured the scene, shut down the vehicle, and learned that the same car had struck another vehicle moments earlier. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was transported to hospital in stable condition.
People were inside the building at the time of the collision, but paramedics say no one required medical treatment. The business involved appears to be a TD Bank.
Ottawa Fire Services’ Structural Collapse Team attended the scene and provided temporary support to the building. Due to the extent of the damage, responders raised concerns about the building’s stability. The Structural Collapse Team carried out a stabilization plan to support a weakened brick façade. Officials noted that electrical systems were unaffected, though building management was warned about a sprinkler exposed to freezing conditions.
Fire services left the scene shortly after 6 p.m., while Ottawa police continue to investigate what led to the collision.
