A fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a multi-unit residential building on Granville Street in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood, prompting a man in his 50s to jump from a second-storey window to escape the flames. Ottawa Fire Services responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls around 1:30 p.m., reporting heavy smoke and a person attempting to jump.
Firefighters arrived to find thick black smoke and quickly launched an interior attack. No other occupants were found inside the building. The man who jumped suffered a non-life-threatening ankle injury and was taken to hospital.
The fire was brought under control by 2:06 p.m., and nearby homes were successfully protected. An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
