A man is in life-threatening condition after being struck on Highway 401 in Mississauga in a crash Ontario Provincial Police believe involved aggressive driving and street racing.
Police say the incident happened just after noon on Sunday in the westbound express lanes near Renforth Drive. A pickup truck with a trailer had pulled onto the shoulder, where the driver exited the vehicle to check his load.
Investigators say two BMWs were allegedly driving aggressively and racing when they struck the man on the highway. He was rushed to a trauma centre with serious, life-threatening injuries.
OPP say one of the vehicles involved remained at the scene, while the other fled after the collision. Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward. The two left westbound lanes remained closed into the afternoon as investigators worked at the scene, though ramps in the area have since reopened. Drivers were advised to expect delays.
Update – Police have charged a New York resident, who was directly involved in the collision, with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and stunt driving. The second driver who allegedly left the scene was later identified and arrested. He faces the same charges.
