Ontario Provincial Police are urging drivers to prioritize safety after a man was seriously injured while changing a tire in a live lane on Highway 401 in Cambridge.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. near the Hespeler Road exit, when the man stopped his vehicle in the far-left lane instead of pulling onto the shoulder. While attempting to change a tire on the driver’s side, he was struck by a passing vehicle and thrown to the ground.

He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a trauma centre. The vehicle that hit him did not remain at the scene. Police believe it may have damage to its passenger-side mirror and are continuing to search for the driver.

Officials emphasize the importance of moving disabled vehicles to the shoulder or nearest exit when possible, and using hazard lights to alert others. Witnesses are asked to contact the OPP Cambridge detachment at 519-654-0150.
