A man in his 60s was rescued from an apartment fire in a high-rise building in Ottawa’s Vanier neighbourhood on Saturday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Services responded to a residential tower on Lacasse Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. following multiple alarm activations reported by a monitoring agency. Upon arrival, firefighters detected smoke on the 11th floor and deployed additional crews to contain the blaze.

Emergency responders located the man inside an apartment unit and safely removed him from the building. Paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him to hospital with mild smoke inhalation.

Officials believe the fire began when a kitchen appliance caught fire while in use. The blaze was contained to a single apartment unit and was brought under control within approximately 25 minutes.

Ottawa Victim Services was called to assist residents affected by the incident. Occupants were later allowed back into the building after air quality tests confirmed it was safe to re-enter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
