York Regional Police are calling on a motorist involved in a serious hit-and-run in Markham to surrender to authorities after a 19-year-old woman suffered critical injuries.
The collision occurred around 3:41 p.m. Thursday near Denison Street and Featherstone Avenue. According to investigators, the young woman had just exited a bus and was lawfully crossing at a crosswalk when a left-turning vehicle struck her.
Police say the driver continued moving for approximately 50 metres with the victim on the hood before speeding away eastbound on Denison Street toward Middlefield Avenue. At the next intersection, instead of waiting at a red light, the vehicle allegedly entered oncoming traffic to proceed northbound.
The victim was transported to a trauma centre and remains in critical condition with life-altering injuries.
Authorities are searching for a dark blue, four-door Honda Civic, model years 2016 to 2020, equipped with winter tires on steel rims, chrome accents, and tinted windows. The car is expected to have heavy damage to the windshield, hood, and roof.
Police stress that the driver would have been aware of the impact and are urging them to come forward. Investigators are also asking witnesses, anyone who spots the vehicle, or auto repair shops that encounter a car matching the description to contact police.
The intersection was shut down for several hours as officers examined the scene.
