A fire in downtown London caused an estimated $125,000 in damage on Wednesday morning and briefly triggered a mayday alert. Crews were called to a two-storey building at 260 Burwell Street, just north of Horton Street, shortly after 8 a.m.
Firefighters deployed an aerial unit and quickly worked to control the blaze, which was producing thick smoke. Although the smoke was heavy, it did not indicate a large, fast-moving fire. Crews located and extinguished the fire promptly.
While moving through the structure, firefighters encountered a hazardous hole in the floor, prompting a mayday call to alert others to the danger. Despite this, crews pushed forward safely in low visibility.
No injuries were reported. The fire is believed to have originated in a utility room and is not considered suspicious.
