Four people, including two young children, were seriously injured in a three-vehicle collision in Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday evening.

Police say the crash happened around 7:10 p.m. near the intersection of Black Road and Second Line East. When officers arrived, they found three vehicles involved in the collision, along with three other vehicles that had narrowly avoided impact and ended up in nearby snowbanks.

Investigators determined that a van travelling at high speed on Black Road crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an SUV. A second SUV then struck the first from behind.

The 43-year-old driver of the van, along with the 38-year-old driver of the SUV, a two-year-old child, and an infant who were passengers in the same SUV were all taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the drivers of the other vehicles involved were not seriously hurt.
