A Good Samaritan is being praised after rescuing a driver from a submerged vehicle in Guelph Lake during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
According to Wellington County OPP, the incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday when a vehicle left Wellington Road 29, overturned, and landed upside down in the lake. The driver became trapped inside as the vehicle rapidly filled with water.
A nearby witness immediately jumped into the lake, cut the driver’s seatbelt, and safely pulled them from the sinking vehicle before bringing them to shore. Police credited the individual’s swift and selfless actions with saving the driver’s life.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the rescue. OPP described the witness’s bravery and compassion as an inspiring example of community spirit.
The 54-year-old Guelph driver involved in the crash has been charged with making an unsafe move under the Highway Traffic Act.
