A late-night fire at a multi-tenant house on 2nd Avenue East in Owen Sound ended without injuries.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 1:45 a.m. Saturday after a fire broke out on the building’s third floor. Residents were already evacuating when firefighters arrived and encountered heavy smoke. Crews quickly traced the source to a burning mattress, later determining the fire was caused by smoking-related materials.
A functioning smoke alarm alerted the resident in the affected unit, allowing them to escape safely. Fire officials used the incident to emphasize the life-saving importance of working smoke alarms.
