Fire crews are working to fully contain a large blaze that broke out late Wednesday night at a waste transfer station on Disco Road in Etobicoke.
The fire began around 10:30 p.m. inside the 50,000-square-foot facility, where piles of debris—made up of plastics and construction materials—caught fire. At its peak, about 100 firefighters and 20 trucks responded. As of Thursday morning, roughly 40 firefighters remained on site to manage heavy smoke and access deep-seated flames using heavy equipment.
No injuries were reported, and the facility was closed at the time of the incident. Authorities are monitoring environmental impacts, particularly potential runoff into Mimico Creek. The City of Toronto and the Ministry of the Environment are involved in mitigation efforts, and some nearby facilities have temporarily closed due to smoke and air quality concerns.
Officials say the fire is now under control and poses no immediate risk to surrounding areas.
