A residential building in Orillia suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out overnight, forcing all occupants to evacuate.
Firefighters were called to the three-storey building on 265 Barrie Road shortly after midnight Tuesday. Crews arrived to find flames consuming a main-floor apartment, with fire visible through its windows and doorway.
Everyone living in the building’s five units was able to get out safely, and no injuries were reported. The property’s fire alarm system was also functioning at the time.
The blaze quickly spread beyond the initial unit, travelling along the outside of the structure and moving upward through the second and third floors before reaching the attic. Fire also reached the roof, which partially collapsed during the response.
Fourteen Orillia firefighters battled the blaze with assistance from crews in Ramara and Severn. The fire displaced everyone living in the building.
The fire department has not yet determined what caused the incident. Investigators do not currently consider the fire suspicious, and Barrie Road has since reopened.
