Windsor police are searching for a suspect following a suspicious fire that caused approximately $1 million in damage to a mixed-use building on Ottawa Street early Monday morning.
Officers responded shortly before 7:30 a.m. to a reported fire at a two-storey building in the 1200 block of Ottawa Street. Windsor firefighters extinguished the blaze, which damaged a property containing both commercial and residential units. No injuries were reported.
Investigators discovered a gas can inside the building and determined the fire was suspicious. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a person fleeing from behind the building before heading north on Hall Avenue past Ottawa Street shortly after the fire was reported at approximately 5 a.m.
The suspect is described as having a thin-to-medium build and wearing a dark hoodie, black pants, large work boots and light-coloured gloves.
Police are urging residents and business owners in the surrounding area to review surveillance and dashcam recordings captured between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 12 for footage that could assist the investigation.
