Four residents have been forced from their homes following a Thursday evening fire in Chatham-Kent that caused an estimated $180,000 in damage to a three-unit residential building.

According to a municipal news release, crews from Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue responded to a call on King Street East shortly after 5:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived with two trucks to find thick black smoke and flames coming from the rear unit of the building.

The blaze was brought under control within minutes. Crews searched all three apartments and confirmed no one was inside at the time. While the fire was largely contained to the rear unit, smoke spread into the attic area.

No injuries were reported.
