Firefighters quickly contained a significant fire involving railway materials in east London on Monday afternoon, preventing damage from spreading to nearby businesses and additional rail equipment.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Elias Street shortly after 4:30 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke and flames. The fire prompted health concerns as thick black smoke drifted through nearby neighbourhoods, leading firefighters to advise residents to remain indoors and keep windows closed.
Crews arrived within four minutes and were able to stop the fire from spreading to surrounding businesses and nearby railway cars within an hour.
According to officials, the fire involved a large pile of used railway ties located near tracks operated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City. Officials noted that the ties were treated with a preservative containing oily compounds that can release potentially harmful gases when burned.
The long-term health impact of short-term exposure to smoke from burning railway ties remains uncertain. Most available research focuses on workers with repeated exposure or long-term studies involving animals. Current evidence suggests the risk of long-term harm is likely lower than with prolonged exposure. Nevertheless, any kind of smoke inhalation is unhealthy and should be avoided whenever possible.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire. Firefighters remained at the scene into the evening to extinguish hot spots and ensure the area was safe. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
