Ottawa firefighters responded to two fires in less than two hours on Tuesday evening, both of which caused minimal damage.
The first call came at 7:04 p.m. from a home in the Stittsville subdivision on Taliesin Crescent, where residents reported a fire in their oven. Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the front door and alarms sounding inside. The residents had evacuated, and firefighters quickly contained the flames to the oven, using water to extinguish the fire. A thorough search of the home revealed no further fire extension, and high-pressure fans were used to ventilate the house. Fire officials praised the residents for their quick actions, advising that in similar situations, it’s important to leave the oven door closed and power off to prevent the fire from spreading.
Less than an hour later, at 8:28 p.m., another fire broke out in an apartment building on Frobisher Lane in the Alta Vista neighbourhood. A resident reported smoke in their unit, and upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke in the lobby and traced it to a first-floor apartment. The fire was located in the bedroom, where crews quickly extinguished the flames. Although the fire was contained to the bedroom, the occupant will be displaced, while the rest of the building was ventilated and allowed to return.
Both incidents were swiftly handled, preventing any major damage or injuries.
