An SUV ended up in the Rideau River after a crash near Riverside Drive and Walkley Road early Friday morning.
The collision happened around 5:40 a.m. where an SUV travelling west on Walkley Road struck a pole while turning onto Riverside Drive before continuing into the river.
Bystanders rushed to help, pulling both the driver and passenger from the water shortly after the crash. The vehicle was later recovered from the river.
Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the collision. The driver has been charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand under the Criminal Code.
Ottawa paramedics said neither occupant required treatment at a hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.
