Fourteen residents were displaced after a fire heavily damaged a townhouse complex on Hamilton’s West Mountain early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to Caroga Court shortly after midnight and found a blaze that had spread from the rear of one unit into the exterior walls, attic, and roof spaces of neighbouring units. Crews brought the fire under control within about 20 minutes.

No injuries were reported, although one cat died in the incident. Two townhouse units sustained significant damage, and a natural gas meter also caught fire during firefighting efforts.

Preliminary damage estimates range from $1 million to $1.5 million. All displaced residents were able to secure temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified due to the extent of the damage.
