A late-night fire caused heavy damage to a two-storey motel in the Beach 1 area of Wasaga Beach on Monday.
Emergency crews were called just before midnight to 45 Mosley Street, the location of the Villa Nova Motel Resort. When firefighters arrived, flames had already spread across a large portion of the building’s second floor.
Part of the upper level was destroyed, leaving the motel uninhabitable. Damage is estimated at close to $2 million. Four people who were inside at the time managed to evacuate safely, and several pets were rescued early in the response by police officers and paramedics.
No civilian injuries were reported, though one volunteer firefighter suffered an ankle injury while responding and was taken to hospital as a precaution before later being released.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will decide whether to attend the scene as investigators continue to assess the incident.
