One person died Monday afternoon after two snowmobilers broke through the ice on Bay Lake near Latchford, Ont. The incident happened shortly before 3 p.m., prompting a response from Ontario Provincial Police along with local fire, rescue, and EMS teams.

According to police, three people were out snowmobiling when two of them fell through the ice and became trapped. Multiple emergency crews — including the Latchford Fire Department, Temiskaming Shores Fire Department with its ice rescue team and drone, and Ornge air ambulance — were called in to help.

Rescuers managed to pull both individuals from the water and rush them to hospital. One snowmobiler did not survive despite emergency efforts, while the other suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police are urging anyone heading onto frozen lakes or rivers to use extreme caution, noting that ice conditions can change quickly and should always be checked before venturing out.
