A house fire in Hamilton on Sunday claimed the life of a woman and sent another person to hospital for smoke inhalation after attempting a rescue. The blaze broke out around noon at a two-storey home at 29 Mons Avenue in the city’s east end.
According to the Hamilton Fire Department, heavy smoke and flames were coming from second-floor windows when crews arrived. Firefighters later located the deceased woman during a search of the upper level. A neighbour who tried to enter the home before emergency responders arrived was hospitalized.
The fire has been brought under control, and no other injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
The street remains closed for investigation. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to assist Hamilton police. Fire Chief David Cunliffe extended condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
