A 22-year-old man from Caledonia has died following a three-vehicle crash in Hamilton early Tuesday morning.
Police say the collision occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Highway 8 under dark, foggy conditions. The crash involved a tractor trailer, a pickup truck, and a passenger vehicle, with one car catching fire.
Investigators say the pickup driver was travelling northbound and attempted to pass the tractor trailer but was unable to complete the maneuver before encountering oncoming traffic around a curve. While trying to merge back, the pickup made contact with the truck, lost control, and crossed into the opposite lanes, where it was struck by a southbound vehicle.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Highway 8 was closed between Orkney Road and Highway 52 for several hours as crews responded and investigated, reopening around 2:30 p.m. Police continue to examine factors such as road and driver conditions.
