A fatal two-vehicle collision in Scarborough on Thursday night left one person dead and three others seriously injured.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. near Sheppard Avenue East and Vandorf Street, just north of Highway 401. Investigators say a Nissan Altima travelling northbound crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a Volkswagen Jetta.

A 42-year-old passenger in the Nissan died at the scene, while the 38-year-old driver was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen, 32, and a 49-year-old passenger also suffered serious injuries.

Police initially reported that a person had been arrested for suspected impaired driving, but later clarified that the individual was not operating either vehicle involved in the crash. Authorities confirmed that no criminal charges have been filed against the drivers at this time.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. Sheppard Avenue East remains closed as investigators continue to examine the scene.
