One person was hospitalized and two pets died following an apartment fire in downtown Ottawa Tuesday evening.
Ottawa Fire Services responded around 5:55 p.m. to reports of alarms and smoke at a 14-storey building on McLeod Street near Cartier Street. Firefighters contained the blaze to a single unit on the seventh floor and extinguished it shortly after 7:15 p.m.
A resident was taken to hospital with serious but stable injuries, while another person was treated at the scene and released. Fire crews later found a dog and a cat deceased inside the affected unit.
Ventilation crews cleared smoke from the building, and air quality testing confirmed residents could safely return. Two residents have been displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
