Police in Niagara Falls say one of three aggressive dogs roaming loose Tuesday evening was shot and killed after it charged at an officer.

Officers were called around 5:30 p.m. to the area of Thorold Stone and Kalar roads following reports that several large dogs were running through traffic and chasing pedestrians. One person was bitten and treated for minor injuries, while bystanders attempted unsuccessfully to contain the animals.

When police arrived and tried to regain control, one of the dogs reportedly charged at an officer and forced them into traffic. The officer responded by firing their service weapon, killing the animal at the scene.

The remaining two dogs were captured and turned over to the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society, which is now handling the investigation into the bite and any potential bylaw violations. The dogs were later returned to their owner.

Authorities have not disclosed how the dogs got loose, their breed, or whether any charges will be laid.
