One person has died after a two-alarm fire at a 20-storey apartment building in Scarborough on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters responded to the building near Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue at approximately 7:45 a.m., where flames had engulfed the living area of a 16th-floor apartment. The fire was quickly brought under control and did not spread to neighbouring units.
An adult was found without vital signs on the ground outside the building. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency crews, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not identified the victim. Some apartments sustained smoke and water damage during firefighting operations. Toronto Fire, Toronto police, and the Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating the cause and circumstances of the blaze. Investigators are also interviewing witnesses to determine whether the victim exited the apartment during the incident. Authorities say there is no indication that the fire is suspicious at this time.
