A transport truck driver has died following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in London on Thursday evening.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes between Highbury Avenue and Veterans Memorial Parkway. London Fire Department crews had to remove one person from a transport truck before turning them over to paramedics. The truck driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead. The driver and passenger in the second transport truck were not injured.
A diesel fuel spill of approximately 200 litres prompted a response from the fire department’s hazmat unit and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the cause of the collision. The westbound lanes remained closed into the evening, with traffic diverted at Veterans Memorial Parkway. The highway fully reopened shortly after 1 a.m.
