An elderly woman is dead and two others were injured after a head-on collision north of Pickering on Monday morning.
Durham Regional Police said the crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on Altona Road near Third Concession Road when a southbound Toyota SUV veered into the opposite lane and struck a northbound sedan.
The 85-year-old driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the hospital, while her 84-year-old passenger was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre in critical but stable condition. The 74-year-old SUV driver was also hospitalized with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Police continue to investigate and have asked anyone with dashcam or cellphone footage to come forward. The road remained closed for several hours due to the severity of the collision.
