One person has died following an early morning apartment fire in a North York high-rise building.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 2 a.m. to reports of a fire in a fourth-floor unit near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a two-alarm fire.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found one person inside the apartment, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said there was no indication that anyone else lived in the unit.
Three people were taken to hospital, including two residents who suffered smoke inhalation and one firefighter with minor injuries. The firefighter has since been treated and released, while another patient sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Fire crews remain at the building on fire watch as investigators and the Office of the Fire Marshal work to determine the cause of the blaze.
