A woman is in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a fire broke out in a second-floor unit of a low-rise apartment building in Scarborough late Monday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the building on Lawrence Avenue East near Orton Park Road just before 5:30 p.m. after smoke was seen coming from a window.
The small fire was quickly extinguished, and paramedics treated several residents on scene, though no one else required hospital care. A TTC shelter bus was brought in to assist evacuees, and firefighters continue to check the building because of lingering smoke.
