A two-alarm fire at a city-run shelter in Etobicoke early Wednesday morning was contained to a single seventh-floor unit, with officials saying the room contained lithium-ion batteries that were charging.
Toronto Fire responded to the 13-storey building on Islington Avenue near Dixon Road at approximately 5:35 a.m. Heavy smoke from the unit prompted a two-alarm response, but the building’s sprinkler system helped contain the fire before it spread to neighbouring rooms.
One person was taken to hospital with non-fire-related injuries, while no fire-related injuries were reported.
Firefighters found several burned lithium-ion batteries inside the unit, though investigators have not determined whether the batteries caused or contributed to the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
