A person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burn injuries following a house fire on Thunder Bay’s south side early Wednesday morning.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the blaze around 7 a.m. near Gore Street and Home Avenue, after a passerby reported thick black smoke. The response involved six pumper trucks, an aerial unit, and a command vehicle.

Platoon Chief Stephen Vincent confirmed that Superior North EMS transported one person to hospital, though the severity of the injuries is unknown. The fire caused extensive damage to the main floor of the home.

Kevin Anderson, Division Chief of Fire Prevention, stated that the fire was caused by the improper disposal of a cigarette.

In a statement, the fire department reminded the public to handle smoking materials responsibly and to call 911 immediately in emergencies.
