An apartment building in Waterloo was evacuated Saturday evening after a fire broke out on the seventh floor. Waterloo Fire Rescue responded to the incident on Hickory Street East around 5:15 p.m. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution for possible smoke inhalation.
Transit buses were brought in to shelter residents while firefighters worked to control the blaze, which was quickly extinguished after crews arrived to find flames coming from an upper-floor window. The incident has been reported to the Office of the Fire Marshal.
The cause has not yet been determined, and damage is estimated at about $500,000. Most residents have since been allowed to return to their units, though some remain displaced.
