An Oshawa man has been charged after police allege he deliberately drove into a pedestrian, leaving the victim with critical, life-threatening injuries.
Durham police responded to the area of Nonquon Road and Mary Street North at about 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 following reports that a black Volkswagen sedan travelling northbound suddenly crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 36-year-old pedestrian.
Police say the driver fled after the collision. The victim was treated by officers and paramedics before being taken to a local hospital. He was later airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he remains in critical condition.
Investigators located the Volkswagen abandoned nearby. Shortly after 12:40 a.m. on Aug. 7, officers executed a search warrant at an Oshawa residence and arrested the suspect without incident.
Police believe the incident was targeted and say the accused and victim are known to each other.
Carter William Boyce, 28, of Oshawa, faces charges of aggravated assault, dangerous operation causing bodily harm and failing to remain at a collision causing bodily harm. He was held for a bail hearing.
The allegations have not been tested in court. Durham police are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
