A senior Ottawa police officer has been charged following an incident in Oakville that occurred on June 12.

Halton Regional Police allege that a dispute stemming from a collision between two vehicles shortly before 10:30 p.m. resulted in an assault charge against Staff Sgt. Walt Lushman, who was off duty at the time.

Lushman was released under conditions and is scheduled to address the charge through the court process.

The Ottawa Police Service confirmed that its Professional Standards Unit has launched an internal investigation. While the matter remains before the courts, officials have limited Lushman’s duties, removing him from public-facing responsibilities pending the outcome of the investigation.
