A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle that left the scene in Mississauga Tuesday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West shortly after 6 p.m. Police say the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by first responders.

Investigators say the vehicle involved was a dark-coloured pickup truck. Police believe the pedestrian was travelling northbound and had entered the west side of the crosswalk when they were struck. The truck was travelling southbound on Winston Churchill Boulevard before turning west onto Dundas Street West and leaving the area.

The victim is only identified to be a man in his 60s, and police have not yet released details about what led to the collision.

Dundas Street remains closed in both directions between Hampshire Gate and Woodchester Drive as the investigation continues.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police.

Update – Investigators identified the vehicle and arrested its owner, 69-year-old Aubrey Lawrence, near his Hamilton home Wednesday evening. The pickup truck has since been seized.

Lawrence faces a charge of failing to remain at an accident resulting in death. Police said further charges are possible as the investigation continues.
