A person is dead after being hit by a vehicle on westbound Highway 401 early Tuesday morning, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. between Mallorytown and Lansdowne, when the victim exited their parked car on the shoulder and was hit by a moving vehicle.

To protect the privacy of the victim’s family, their identity will not be released. The OPP’s Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Unit (TIME) and a collision reconstructionist are investigating the scene, alongside the Office of the Chief Coroner.

The highway was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.
