Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a 26-year-old man was fatally shot by a Toronto police officer in North York on Saturday afternoon.
Police were called to the King High Avenue and De Quincy Boulevard area at around 1:24 p.m. following reports of a damaged vehicle being driven erratically. The vehicle was involved in a crash, and police say the driver attempted to leave as officers arrived.
Authorities allege the man was armed with a firearm. An interaction then occurred between the suspect and two officers, during which one officer discharged their weapon.
The man was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.
The Special Investigations Unit has taken over the investigation and will examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
