A repeat high-risk driver is facing multiple charges after an alleged attempt to escape police in Brampton.

The initial incident took place around 11:45 a.m. on March 18 near Bovaird and Sunforest drives, when an Automated Licence Plate Reader flagged a vehicle linked to a prohibited driver. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but police say the suspect fled dangerously.

The following morning at about 8 a.m., officers located the same vehicle near Sunforest Drive and Wexford Road and coordinated a plan to stop it. As police vehicles moved in to block the car, the driver allegedly reversed into a cruiser in an effort to escape. Video released by investigators shows the suspect vehicle being boxed in, the collision with the police cruiser, and the driver later being taken into custody.

Police say a passenger exited the vehicle during the incident, and the driver was found in possession of a replica firearm at the time of arrest.

Investigators also allege the suspect had been involved in three previous incidents where he fled from police, with actions that put public safety at risk.

A 34-year-old Brampton man, Iqbal Dhatt, has been charged with 13 offences, including multiple counts of fleeing police, dangerous driving, and breaching release conditions. The allegations have not been proven in court. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow, while the Canada Border Services Agency has launched a separate immigration probe.
