A fast-moving fire tore through multiple buildings in midtown London early Saturday morning, forcing residents to evacuate and leaving several people displaced.
Emergency crews were called around 6:30 a.m. to the area of Dundas and Maitland streets, where flames had spread through both commercial and residential structures and reached the roof. Residents quickly alerted neighbours by knocking on doors and shouting warnings as the fire intensified.
Firefighters responded with about 40 personnel and 10 units, launching an aggressive attack that included aerial operations after the blaze broke through the roof. A primary search confirmed no one was trapped inside, and crews later shifted to a defensive approach due to structural instability.
Roughly 10 to 12 residents were displaced, with assistance provided for temporary accommodations. Emergency responders also helped evacuees stay warm during the cold morning.
Three businesses sustained heavy damage and are expected to remain closed for an extended period, while nearby businesses are being assessed for reopening. Officials estimate total damage will exceed $1 million.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, with the Office of the Fire Marshal involved.
