An elderly resident has died following a late-night fire at a North York retirement home. Police say the fire broke out around 10:22 p.m. Sunday in the area of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue West. Toronto Fire crews rescued a man in his 80s from a fourth-floor unit where the fire started and transported him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Fire officials reported that 21 trucks responded and the flames were brought under control quickly. Due to minimal smoke conditions inside the building, an evacuation was not required. The Office of the Fire Marshal is now investigating the cause of the fire.
