Highway 6 has reopened following a serious crash between a transport truck and a passenger vehicle near Goat Island Road in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Township.
The collision happened around 6:15 p.m. Monday, prompting a full highway closure between the Little Current Swing Bridge and Sunshine Valley Road near Birch Island. The road reopened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
One driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. By early Tuesday, the condition was updated to serious but no longer life-threatening. Only the two drivers were involved, although bystanders stopped to assist at the scene. The local fire department also provided support.
Police acknowledged the help of witnesses and noted that if the driver’s condition worsens, traffic reconstructionists may still be brought in, which could lead to further delays.
