Firefighters in Ottawa swiftly knocked down a kitchen blaze in a high-rise building Tuesday morning.
Ottawa Fire Services responded around 7:25 a.m. to a 911 report of a fire in the 2000 block of Draper Avenue, west of Greenbank Road. Crews arrived within minutes and observed thick black smoke billowing from a fifth-floor balcony.
Firefighters advanced to the fifth floor, where they encountered dense smoke and confirmed significant flames in the kitchen of the affected unit. The fire was contained to that area and brought under control by 7:42 a.m.
A search of the apartment found no people inside, but a cat was discovered in a bathtub. The animal was safely removed, given oxygen, and reunited with its owner.
Victim Services provided assistance to three adults displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported.
