A deadly rollover involving a tractor-trailer carrying dangerous goods has caused significant traffic disruptions on Highway 401 in Mississauga.
The accident occurred around 10:20 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes, where the truck reportedly collided with a concrete wall, leading to the rollover. The driver of the truck was killed in the crash.
As a result, both directions of the express lanes are closed from Mississauga Road to Winston Churchill Boulevard, and major delays are expected. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed that the closure is expected to last for several hours while authorities investigate the cause of the crash and manage the cleanup.
The Ministry of Transportation has stated that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. However, due to the presence of dangerous chemicals in the truck, emergency crews are working to establish a safety perimeter around the area. The specific chemicals being transported have not yet been disclosed.
For drivers planning to travel through the area, alternate routes such as Derry and Britannia Roads or Highway 407 are being recommended, as the situation is expected to worsen during the afternoon commute. Westbound express lanes are also closed west of Hurontario to allow for the investigation and to prevent further traffic from entering the affected area.
Traffic experts advise against traveling near the crash site, as delays are expected to continue for several hours.
