Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a crash in Smiths Falls that occurred shortly after an officer attempted to stop a motorcyclist early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened around 4:24 a.m. near Queen Street and Albert Street. According to the Special Investigations Unit, an officer had spotted a motorcycle of interest near Chambers Street and Elmsley Street and directed the rider to pull over.

Police say the motorcyclist instead fled at high speed. The officer followed for a short distance before the motorcycle crashed on Queen Street near Albert Street.

The rider was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU has invoked its mandate, meaning the agency will oversee the investigation.
