Ontario’s police watchdog has launched an investigation following a serious two-vehicle crash in east Hamilton that injured both drivers on Friday morning.
Hamilton Police said officers attempted to stop a black Dodge Challenger near the intersection of King Street East and Balsam Avenue North shortly before 6:30 a.m. The 44-year-old driver did not stop and drove away.
Moments later, the Challenger collided with a silver Ford Escape at a nearby intersection. The Challenger driver and the 61-year-old woman driving the Ford Escape were transported to hospital with serious injuries. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) later confirmed both are in stable condition.
The SIU said it assumed responsibility for the investigation because a Hamilton police officer had attempted to stop the Challenger before the collision.
As investigators continue their work, King Street East remains closed between Connaught Avenue North and Leinster Avenue South. Authorities expect the affected roads to reopen by approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday.
